complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. i am julie haener. >> and i am frank somerville. >> the three men accused in a home invasion of a couple in san jose are now facing criminal charges for a separate attack. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose where he went inside the courtroom and tells us what the charges are. robert? >> reporter: well, the newest charge is attempted murder. there has been a lot of attention on the home invasion

but during the crime spree police say they stabbed a man here, and that led to new charges today. >> reporter: the three men accused in attacks and rob -- attacks and robbies found out their -- robberies found out their charges. they had already been charged with 13 felonies, including a armed robbery on january 21 where a couple was bound with duct tape and their cars used as get away vehicles. the neighbor said the couple is still trying to recover. >> she was very shaken up. she needed help desperately. worried about her husband. >> reporter: today they pointed out they stabbed and robbed a man in san jose two nights before the home invasion that led to two new charges today.

>> attempted murder. robbery. and there was bodily injury inflicted on the victim. >> reporter: the list of charges relieved some victims. they were robbed by the men on january 20. one woman is still being treated. >> when they were in the hest rant they hit -- restaurant they hit her, put the employees on the floor. >> charged with 15 separate counts, all are violent felonies. we are taking it seriously. >> reporter: the men are being held without bail and scheduled to return on march 7. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police arrested a 60-year-old man suspect offend shooting another man. we brought you this scene near highway 101 last night. police say he shot and wounded a man after the two argued.

the suspect was booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. the victim is expected to survive. deli is back open after a norovirus sickened 50 people who attended an event catered by the deli. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live with the response from the owner and a warning from health officials. eric? >> reporter: it surprised a lot of people. officials say using hand sanitizer is not enough to kill norovirus. only washing your hands with soap and water is good enough. some people found out the consequences could be unpleasant. >> you have no idea what is wrong with you. i was weak, just -- it just hit you. >> reporter: that is how she described her bout with norovirus. 24 hours after eating a sandwich from north park deli. >> ham.

roast beef. >> reporter: 50 people got sick, all from a lunch inn at a biotech company. they called the health edepartment on monday that race -- health department on monday that traced the virus to north park deli. >> we have an impeccable record. >> reporter: they owned the deli for 13 years and never had a problem. officials shut them down to do a full cleaning with bleach. >> they are back open. cooperative. probably the safest place to eat right now. >> reporter: customers will keep coming back but we heard mixed reaction from those who spent the weekend in agony. >> probably once or twice a week. >> reporter: will you go back? >> i will. >> i will be wary. i think i will cook my own food. >> reporter: officials say it takes 36-48 hours for systems of norovirus to appear and while many people got sick in

this case it does not last long and no one was hospitalized. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new video of a suspect vehicle seen speeding away from the scene of a robbery yesterday. police gave us this cell phone video recorded by a witness. it is brief and shows a car screeching away from a jewelry store. the suspect sprayed employees with pepper spray, smashes cases and made off with watches. police arrested two bike theft suspects. one who was caught stealing a bike as he was on his way home from jail. police arrested him yesterday. he was cutting a bike lock in front of the civic auditorium. he was just released following a domestic violence incident. in the other case police say officers caught another man

cutting a bike lock today. judge today declared a mistrial for a former technician accused of stealing drugs from the san francisco police drug lab. today the judge said the jury reached an impasse. attorneys will return to court february 15 to discuss the next steps in the case. nasa flew a special mission today but instead of heading into space they kept things close to earth. ktvu's david stevenson is live in san francisco with a look at why they are taking a the skies in the bay area. david? >> reporter: that's right. you might have seen it around lunchtime today. flying low on a mission to measure pollution. >> reporter: this bomber is waging war against bay area pollution. nasea researchers and air

quality management district partnered on the project, flying a thousand feet to look at winter air pollution. >> trying to stay down low today. never know before we go out where the top is. >> reporter: sincers mounted inside -- censors mounted inside measure the levels. >> like having smokers in a restaurant. smoke builds up. that is what we are experiencing. >> the plume of the dirty air. the goal is to create maps tracking pollutants in areas where the air quality management district does not have censors on the ground. >> we will determine if there is additional steps they need to take. >> reporter: he says the plan is well -- plane is well suited for the project. >> doesn't make noise like

fighter aircraft do. we don't offend the neighbors when we are flying. >> reporter: and nasa installed cameras to show the pilots view of the pollution. the next goal is to create 3-d maps of pollution pockets. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. california regulators lifted a cease and deicist order, lift cars are known for their pink mustaches. they were criticized for taking away fairs. the cpuc lifted the order after the companies agreed to new safety regulations. california collected extra in tax revenue this morning.

devastated by hurricane katrina in 2005 and it is still struggling to recover 7 years later. the water stayed there for months. when it receded the neighborhood was filled with mud and sewage. 30 bodies were also found and thousands of people were left homeless. we went back to the lower 9th ward today and ktvu's ken wayne is in new orleans tonight with a look at the difference that just 4-1/2 miles can make. ken? >> reporter: frank, the convention center in new orleans is the center for a lot of super bowl activity but back in 2005 this was a temporary evacuation center for victims. so lot has changed here but little has changed in the lower 9th ward. >> reporter: this is how the 9 9th ward looked when ktvu visited in 2005. >> water coming in. no power. guys are going crazy. >> the lower 9th ward today is

like a ghost town. the neighborhood is runed down, vacant. open lots. vacant homes. but people are trying to bring the neighborhood back. >> do the inside. do the floors. put new cabinets in. >> reporter: he works for a company that rehabs flood damaged houses. it is a slow process. one home at a time. >> one home is better than no homes. >> reporter: with the super bowl a few miles away, he feels like his neighborhood is forgotten again. >> you can walk blocks and the houses are the same like 2005. buildings are the same. >> the french quarter is packed with tourists. he understands why resources were poured into making sure they were spruced up. >> guys working non-stop to get it nice and pretty, to get that

big rig crash left a huge mess on a freeway, it happened before 3:00 a.m. on north bound 101. the driver says he was cut off by another driver and lost control striking the guard rail and a light pole.

authorities say the driver was not seriously hurt. 30 gallons of fuel spilled that took several hours to clean up. in sunnyvale a woman was killed in a house fire over night. firefighters were called at 11:30 p.m. last night. a man and a woman lived there. the woman was found dead in a back room. the man was pulled to safety. neighbors say the woman smoked and had a smoking room in the back of her house. the cause of the fire is under investigation. new tonight at 11:00 p.m -- new at 6:00 p.m., a target fought back. ktvu's mike mibach is live with the victim's move to hang on to her purse. mike? >> reporter: that's right. the victim had her keys and other personal information inside the purse so she wanted it back. when she tracked down the thief

the adrenaline took over and had no problem unleashing a dozen punches to the face. >> reporter: inside the civic center, court clerk, big smile and quite the story to tell. >> once i left the car and i had my purse i felt like pounding on my chest. >> reporter: it was last weekend, north gate mall, she was sitting in the food court with her friend, her purse hanging on her chair. >> i looked down and it wasn't there. but i saw a woman running away. i got up and started running. i didn't think. i started running. >> she caught her in the parking lot. the thief was sitting in the passenger seat of a get away car, window down. she introduced herself with her right hand. >> i started pulling it away

from her. she wouldn't let it go. i started to punch her in the face. the car won't star. i keep punching her harder and harder. the thief, in her 20s, let the purse go. the car was a subaru, dark green, white paper plates. police say the footage is too greeny to be released. she has a bit of a bite and she says it paid off. >> me getting back what was mine, not being the victim, switching the tables around, it was pretty exciting. >> reporter: she just left the police department 15 minutes ago. she said she flipped through mugshot and there was no matches. she probably has bruising to her face. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. californians are giving high marks to governor jerry

brown. a new poll found there is widespread support for governor jerry brown's budget proposals and his plans to target education funding. 51% approve of the job he is doing. 75% said the state was moving in the right direction and 69% said good economic times -- economic times are ahead. and a prosed assault weapons ban, 65% supported the idea. 32% opposed it. it was popular in the bay area and los angeles and least popular in the central valley and orange county. people with internet connected macs found apple blocked java from running. they said java is susceptible
